Preparing a Letter of Last Instruction

  • Letter of Last Instruction is an informal document that provides your loved ones with important information and guidance after your death. While it is not a legal document like a will or trust, it serves as a practical roadmap to help your family manage your personal affairs, locate key documents, and carry out your final wishes with less stress.  Keep it in a safe place and review it annually for updates.

    This letter can include:

    • Details about funeral or memorial preferences.
    • Contact information for attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, or others you would like notified about your death.
    • Locations of important documents (like your will, insurance policies, or deeds)
    • A list of accounts, passwords, and digital assets
    • Instructions for personal matters (pet care, social media, etc.)
    • Often times this letter can also include your rational for the choices you made in distributing your personal and financial assets.

It complements your will by covering the “how-to” details that make settling your estate easier and more personal.  Send a copy to your attorney and to your personal representative.
